Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is commonly seen as one of the most complex but well-loved poker games. It is a variation that, even more than normal Omaha poker, invites play from every level of players. This is the chief reason why a once irrelevant game, has expanded in acceptance so amazingly.

Omaha 8 or better begins just like a normal game of Omaha. Four cards are given out to every player. A sequence of wagering ensues where players can wager, check, or drop out. 3 cards are handed out, this is called the flop. Another sequence of betting happens. Once all the gamblers have either called or folded, another card is revealed on the turn. a further round of betting ensues at which point the river card is flipped. The players will need to put together the strongest high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is where a number of players get baffled. Contrasted to Hold’em, in which the board can make up every player’s hand, in Omaha Hi-Lo the player has to utilize precisely 3 cards on the board, and exactly 2 hole cards. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are two ways a pot could be won: the "higher hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is exactly what it sounds like. It is the best possible hand out of every player’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house. It is the same approach in just about every poker game.

The lower hand is more complex, but certainly free’s up the action. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that can be put together, with the lowest value being A-2-3-4-5. Seeing as straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the worst possible hand. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and lower. The low hand wins half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there’s no low hand presented, the high hand takes the entire pot.

It may seem difficult at the start, following a couple of rounds you will be agile enough to pick up on the base nuances of play with ease. Seeing as you have people betting for the low and wagering for the high, and seeing as such a large number of cards are being used at the same time, Omaha/8 offers an exciting range of betting possibilities and because you have many players shooting for the high hand, along with many shooting for the low hand. If you love a game with all kinds of outs and actions, it’s not a waste of your time to participate in Omaha hi lo.
