Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is commonly viewed as one of the most difficult but favored poker games. It’s a variation that, even more than regular Omaha poker, invites play from every level of players. This is the primary reason why a once obscure variation, has grown in acceptance so amazingly.

Omaha 8 or better starts like a regular game of Omaha. Four cards are handed out to every player. A sequence of wagering ensues where gamblers can wager, check, or fold. 3 cards are dealt out, this is called the flop. A further round of betting ensues. After all the gamblers have either called or folded, a further card is revealed on the turn. an additional round of betting happens at which point the river card is revealed. The entrants will need to put together the strongest high and low five card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is where a number of entrants often get baffled. Contrasted to Texas Holdem, where the board can make up everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi/low the player must use exactly 3 cards from the board, and exactly two hole cards. No more, no less. A low hand is the weakest hand that can be put together, with the lowest being A-2-3-4-5. Considering that straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest possible hand. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and below. The low hand wins half of the pot, as does the higher hand. When there’s no lower hand available, the high hand takes the whole pot.

Although it seems complicated at the start, following a few rounds you will be agile enough to pick up on the basic subtleties of the game with ease.
