Howard Lederer grew up in a family of 5 where he loved participating in various card games when he was young. He discovered himself getting really competitive in the above-mentioned card games while playing his father. After graduating from Sr. High school, Howard made a decision to put higher education on hold for a little while and moved away to New York City to play some serious chess. While participating in chess, he was introduced to a poker game taking place in the rear of the room. Howard’s initial 2 years were rough as he played many hours and don’t win a majority of the time. He made some additional cash by being an runner for the poker players. He believed he could better his game by balancing his life away from poker. He made an effort to get more rest and focus even more on the game.

The actual improvement in his abilities happened when he began gambling at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the best gamblers would often challenge one another. Howard had access into a number of the greatest minds in chess. With their help, Howard Lederer would hone his logical thinking abilities. He applied these strategy concepts to the game of NL holdem.

Howard Lederer also helped his sister Annie Duke master poker. Annie Duke was a great student of the game as she would consistently be asking questions about how to make the correct decision. Howard told Annie Duke to move out to Vegas and compete in the World Series of Poker competition. Annie is one of the best women players the poker arena has ever seen. Howard Lederer moved to Sin City in 1993 and participated in money games for the successive 10 years. When the World Poker Tournament grew in popularity, he made the decision to play more tournaments.
