Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is frequently seen as one of the most complicated but well-loved poker variations. It’s a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, invites action from all levels of players. This is the primary reason why a once irrelevant variation, has grown in acceptance so quickly.

Omaha/8 starts just like a regular game of Omaha. Four cards are dealt to every player. A sequence of betting follows where players can bet, check, or drop out. Three cards are handed out, this is known as the flop. A further round of wagering ensues. Once all the players have either called or dropped out, another card is revealed on the turn. a further sequence of betting ensues and then the river card is flipped. The entrants will need to make the best high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is where some players can get confused. Contrasted to Texas Holdem, in which the board can make up every player’s hand, in Omaha hi-low the player must use exactly three cards on the board, and exactly 2 hole cards. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Unlike regular Omaha, there are two ways a pot may be won: the "high hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is just how it sounds. It’s the strongest hand out of everyone’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house. It’s the identical concept in almost every poker game.

A low hand is more difficult, but really free’s up the action. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. A low hand is the worst hand that might be made, with the lowest value being A-2-3-4-5. Considering that straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the smallest value hand possible. The lower hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and below. The low hand wins half of the pot, as just like the high hand. When there’s no lower hand presented, the higher hand takes the entire pot.

While it seems complex at first, following a couple of rounds you will be able to pick up on the fundamental subtleties of the game with ease. Since you have players betting for the low and wagering for the high, and seeing as so many cards are being used at the same time, Omaha/8 offers an amazing collection of betting options and because you have several players shooting for the high, along with a few shooting for the low. If you love a game with all kinds of outs and actions, it is worth your time to participate in Omaha 8 or better.
