Howard Lederer grew up in a family of five where he liked gambling on different card games when he was young. He found himself becoming very aggressive in these particular card games as he was playing his father. After finishing Sr. High school, Howard made a decision to place college on hold for a little bit and moved away to New York to participate in some serious chess. While playing chess, he was brought in to a poker game taking place in the back of the room. Howard’s first two years were difficult as he played countless hours and do not win most times. He made some additional money by being an assistant for the poker enthusiasts. He theorized he could boost his game by balancing his life away from poker. He brought about an effort to acquire more sleep and focus attention more on poker.

The definite improvement in his skills happened when he started gambling at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the greatest players would frequently wager against one another. Howard was able to access some of the foremost minds in chess. With their help, he would hone his strategic thinking abilities. Howard used these strategic concepts in the game of No-Limit holdem.

Howard also assisted his sister Annie Duke learn the game of poker. Annie Duke was a superb student of the game as she constantly asked questions about how to make the correct choice. Howard Lederer told Annie to head out to Sin City and compete in the WSOP tournaments. Annie Duke is one of the strongest female players the poker arena has ever seen. Howard Lederer moved to Sin City in 1993 and competed in money games for the subsequent 10 years. When the WPT grew in popularity, he decided to compete in more tournaments.
