Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is commonly seen as one of the most complex but well-loved poker variations. It is a variation that, even more than regular Omaha poker, aims for action from all levels of players. This is the chief reason why a once invisible variation, has expanded in popularity so amazingly.

Omaha/8 starts just like a regular game of Omaha. Four cards are dealt to each player. A sequence of wagering ensues in which gamblers can wager, check, or fold. 3 cards are dealt out, this is known as the flop. Another round of wagering happens. After all the gamblers have either called or dropped out, an additional card is flipped on the turn. Another sequence of betting follows and then the river card is flipped. The gamblers will need to make the strongest high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is where many players get confused. Contrasted to Texas Holdem, in which the board can make up everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi low the player has to utilize exactly three cards on the board, and precisely two hole cards. No more, not a single card less. Contrary to normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot may be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is just how it sounds. It’s the best hand out of everyone’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house. It is the identical concept in just about every poker game.

A low hand is more complex, but certainly free’s up the action. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. A low hand is the weakest hand that might be made, with the lowest value being A-2-3-4-5. Seeing as straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the smallest value hand possible. The lower hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and lower. The low hand takes half of the pot, as just like the high hand. When there’s no low hand available, the high hand wins the whole pot.

It may seem complicated at first, after a couple of rounds you will be agile enough to pick up on the base subtleties of the game with ease. Seeing as you have people betting for the low and wagering for the high, and since such a large number of cards are being used at the same time, Omaha/8 offers an overwhelming array of betting options and because you have several individuals battling for the high hand, and many battling for the low hand.
