Hiding Tells
Do you ever acquire that itch? The itch to bet, to head to the closest gambling house, to find a good stakes game of Hold em, to sit at a Black jack table for hours on end. I like that itch. And I love to scratch it.
I also love to watch individuals gamble. No two poker faces seem equal. When I gamble I like to consider I put on a poker face that is impenetrable. But I know I have certain gestures. For one, the only time I smoke cigarettes is when I play poker or Pontoon. And then I chain smoke. But I smoke whether or not I am winning or losing, whether I’ve a excellent hand or bad.
I once bet in a weekly poker game. The casino game was usually five card draw. There was a player who played with us just about every week who often wore a hat. When he was dealt a very good hand, unconsciously, he would start touching and wagering with his hat. Needless to say, he by no means won.
The greatest poker player I ever saw was a player who manufactured much more movements and gestures at a poker table than anybody I had ever met. He was impressive in the way he dressed. Always an costly suit and tie, shoes shined and nails manicured. He was meticulous in this manner. And he was always brushing his pants or holding his hands or stacking his chips in neat little piles.
I use to examine him for long periods of time. I’d attempt to see if I could notice his tell. Selecting lint off his jacket- did this imply he was bluffing? Stacking his chips in a short pile – did this mean he had a beneficial hand?
Several years later I bumped into him inside a bar in Chicago, il and we had a beer. I asked him if he have been aware of all those activities he created or if they were unconscious. He told me that just about every little thing he did at a poker table was deliberate. He said that everyone is often checking out everyone else’s poker face. They are trying to spot the the tell.
So his technique was to give them lots to consider about. His thinking was if they have been pondering about him picking a piece of fuzz off his vest and what it meant they sure were not thinking about their cards.
His process was distraction. And it worked for him. Never give up a technique that operates for you.
